Oakland, CA – Oakland’s independent Redistricting Commission selected Draft Map F5 for final adoption. Draft Map F5 will be available on the City’s website for a 14-day public review and comment period.
The Commission will conduct a special meeting to vote on final adoption of Draft Map F5 soon after the 14-day public review and comment period has expired. Draft Map F5 is a modified version of Draft Map F4 and Draft Map F3. The proposed final district map and corresponding census data is available on the Commission’s website.
The public is encouraged to submit comments on the proposed final district map during the public review period starting February 1, 2022 and ending on February 15, 2022. The Commission will hold its next Special Meeting after the public comment period ends. The meeting date and agenda will be posted on the Commission’s website at least three days before the meeting.

Oakland, CA – On Wednesday, January 26, 2022, Oakland’s independent Redistricting Commission held a special meeting to discuss and review modifications to the most recently proposed map for City Council Districts and Oakland Unified School Board Districts. The proposed map under consideration at the start of the meeting was named Draft Map F4. During the meeting, the Commission voted to accept modifications to Draft Map F4 and rename Draft Map F4 to Draft Map F5 and advance Draft Map F5 to final adoption. Draft Map F5 reflects modifications to Draft Map F4 and Draft Map F3.
Draft Map F5 meets all legal requirements set forth in the City Charter, the Federal Voting Rights Act (1965) and the California FAIR MAPS Act (2019).
The Commission failed to adopt a final map by December 31, 2021, which is the deadline mandated by the Oakland City Charter. Upon failure to adopt a new map by December 31st, the City Attorney was required to submit a petition to the Superior Court of California, Alameda County, to temporarily prescribe the district boundaries until the Commission can adopt a final map. The Commission will continue to hold special meetings until a final map is adopted by the Commission. The final map must receive 9 votes to be officially adopted.
The Commission voted on January 5th, by simple majority, to promote Draft Map F3 as the only map for further modification. As a result of the January 5th meeting, the Commissioners were asked to submit modifications to Draft Map F3 with rationale. The Commissioners were instructed to make modifications that address public comment while ensuring that Federal and California legal requirements were met. The submitted modifications were published for public review on the Commission’s website prior to the January 19th meeting. Draft Map F3 became modified Draft Map 4 after a Commission vote during the January 19th meeting and Draft Map F4 became modified Draft Map F5 after the January 26th meeting.
