City of Oakland Awarded $11.1M to Convert Motel into Homeless Housing
Oakland, CA – The City of Oakland has been awarded $11.1 million of Homekey funding to acquire and convert the Inn by the Coliseum motel into housing that will address the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Located on Coliseum Way near the Oakland Coliseum, Inn by the Coliseum will offer 36 units of housing and wrap-around services for people experiencing chronic homelessness. The development team, comprised of Danco Communities and Operation Dignity, Inc., brings deep experience in service-enriched affordable and supportive housing.
“As we continue to work together at the state and city levels with urgency and compassion to end this crisis, I’m grateful for Governor Newsom’s partnership with Homekey,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said. “It’s helping us move unsheltered residents into safety and services quickly and back on a path to permanent supportive housing.”
By converting this site to permanent affordable housing, Inn by the Coliseum will help to shape a community that is slated for exciting change in the next few years. Inn by the Coliseum is adjacent to amenities such transit lines, the Coliseum public market, and Oakland’s historic Fruitvale District. The project expects to welcome residents by late Fall 2022.
The City has dedicated $4.2 million of local Measure KK funds towards the acquisition and rehabilitation, as well as $6.7 million of the City’s allocation of Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) grant funds to support operations.
“Oakland is thrilled to receive our second Homekey award this year from the State,” said Shola Olatoye, Director of the City’s Housing & Community Development Department. “It confirms the importance of supporting more and right-now permanent housing for Oaklanders experiencing homelessness. These are 36 units that will be available within the year for people to call home. Keep it coming!”
