Use of Force (UOF) Levels

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) defines Use of Force (UOF) as any physical or mechanical intervention used by a member or employee to defend, control, overpower, restrain or overcome the resistance of an individual. OPD takes UOF seriously and has employed several strategies to reduce its occurrence (see definitions, strategies, and links to UOF levels below).

The city’s tourism industry continues to be an important engine for growth, supporting more than 7,100 local jobs. In 2016, a record 3.7 million visitors generated an estimated $827 million of economic impact in Oakland. Leisure, hospitality, and retail employment has grown significantly in the past five years, as reflected in national attention on the food and arts scene.

Volunteer with Public Works

Volunteer to clean, green, and beautify Oakland! Each year thousands of people pitch in on a variety of projects such as litter and graffiti removal, landscaping, tree planting, habitat restoration, fire fuels management, and mosaic artwork installation. Public Works sponsors two annual City wide events for Oakland Earth Day and Oakland Creek to Bay Day. Public Works also supports MLK Day of Service, as well as volunteer projects throughout the year by groups and individuals looking to give back to their community.

​The City of Oakland considers water conservation a high priority and an essential part of our commitment to being a sustainable city.

West Oakland Job Resource Center

The West Oakland Job Resource Center (WOJRC) is a place to learn about and prepare for careers in the building and construction trades.

West Oakland Senior Center (WOSC)

The West Oakland Senior Center (WOSC) is the newest of Oakland's Multipurpose Senior Centers, located across from Defremery Park and the West Oakland Library. Activities feature a range of classes such as crafts, chair yoga and dance. The West Oakland Senior Center is within easy access to AC Transit. The facility is available for rentals.

West Oakland Specific Plan

The purpose of the West Oakland Specific Plan is to develop comprehensive, multi-faceted strategies for facilitating the development of selected vacant and/or underutilized commercial and industrial properties within the West Oakland community.

What is a General Plan?

The General Plan is a policy document and establishes a citywide vision and consistent direction for future development. It reflects community priorities, values, and includes supporting goals, policies, and implementation measures to achieve the community's vision.

What's New

The Public Ethics Commission provides educational resources about local ethics, campaign finance, and transparency rules and requirements. In an effort to keep you informed regarding new and updated laws, manuals, forms, and other Commission publications and services, this page will be updated as changes occur.

Whistleblower Hotline Program

The Office of the City Auditor operates a confidential hotline to accept reports of fraud, waste, and abuse. The name and contact information or anyone filing a report will remain anonymous.

Willie Keyes (Poplar) Recreation Center

One of our newest centers, Willie Keyes is located in West Oakland near Emeryville which claims Pixar Animation Studio and Bay Street Shopping Center. It is the only City of Oakland facility in West Oakland that is equipped with a full sized gymnasium including a weight room, lighted outdoor basketball court, volleyball court, lighted softball field, asphalt playground, tot lot, picnic area, patio area, a wireless computer lab, multipurpose rooms and a state of the art kitchen.
