Buildings and Facilities Services

Public Works provides direct tenant services to a wide variety of client agencies, including custodial services, building engineering, security and access controls, air quality monitoring, emergency response and property management.

Oakland maintains:

309 City-owned buildings and facilities.
Over 3,000,000 square feet of space.
City Hall, City offices, 25 recreation centers, the Main Library and 16 neighborhood branch libraries, 25 fire stations, 5 senior centers, 5 municipal swimming pools and 33 field house restrooms.

Public Works is also responsible for scheduling and approving special event requests for the buildings and the Plaza and property management support to City tenants located in the Civic Center Complex.

Building engineering provides maintenance activities at the Emergency Operations Center, Hall of Justice, Eastmont Police Substation, Main Library, African-American Museum and Library, Veterans Building and the Henry J. Kaiser Convention buildings.

Responsibilities include repairs to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), elevators, electrical and plumbing systems.

In addition, the building engineers also provide maintenance services to many of the 309 City-owned buildings across the City, including maintenance of elevators, UPS/diesel generators, air compressors and vehicle-fueling stations.
