Downtown Oakland Parking Study

The Downtown Oakland Parking Study was designed to explore parking issues and opportunities in the heart of Oakland. The study informs how future transportation and parking policies and investments can support local retail and economic growth. This year-long study built on similar studies conducted in the Jack London, Montclair and Temescal neighborhoods in 2009. Current conditions and peer-City reviews, data collection and analysis, surveys and public outreach and stakeholder oversight resulted in a series of deliverables culminating in a Parking Management Report that includes recommendations and implementation plans designed to move from concept to reality on the streets of downtown Oakland. The ongoing study helped Oakland secure federal funding for a demand-responsive parking and mobility initiative set to begin in the fall of 2016. This study was made possible by a Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Technical Assistance Program grant. The City has retained the transportation planning firm Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates to assist City staff in completing this study.
