Talking Transition

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has launched Talking Transition, a citywide civic engagement process that will center Oakland's youth and culminate in a solutions-based Action Plan co-created by the community to be released in fall 2023.

Oaklanders can shape the process through multiple activities this summer, including a citywide Solutions Survey to build consensus around ideas for the Action Plan; a series of Community Conversations to convene advocacy leaders and community members to collectively interpret Survey results; and Action Plan Workshops, hosted in partnership with City staff, to develop concrete pathways to implementation.

Throughout the process, Talking Transition will empower young Oaklanders to participate in data collection and consensus-building for the Action Plan. Young Oaklanders will be hired and trained to lead engagement efforts across the city, with guidance from community-based organizations.

Talking Transition is a partnership between community leaders, the Office of Mayor Sheng Thao, Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, and City Administrator Johnson, implemented with support from local philanthropic partners.
