OPD is Investigating Multiple Violent Crimes Over the Holiday Weekend

The City of Oakland experienced an uptick in violent crime over the holiday weekend, with multiple homicides, shootings, and a fatal traffic incident.

OPD is Investigating Multiple Violent Crimes Over the Holiday Weekend

The City of Oakland experienced an uptick in violent crime over the holiday weekend, with multiple homicides, shootings, and a fatal traffic incident.

On Friday, June 16, 2023, an individual was struck and killed by a vehicle in the 5200 block of Foothill Boulevard.

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is diligently investigating four homicides. The first incident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. on June 17, 2023, in the 100 block of 14th Street. As officers were investigating this case, a second homicide occurred in the 2100 block of 39th Avenue, shortly after 3:00 a.m.

The third homicide occurred around 2:45 a.m. on June 18, 2023, in the 1900 block of 73rd Avenue.

A fourth homicide occurred just before 6:00 p.m. on June 19, 2023, in the 5000 block of Camden Street.

In all instances, the victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to the next-of-kin.

Through the diligent work of OPD patrol officers, investigations, and the Violent Crime Operations Division (VCOC), an individual was taken into custody in connection to the 39th Avenue homicide.

Officers are also investigating multiple shootings that occurred citywide. In one incident, a juvenile victim was struck by gunfire just before 9:15 p.m. on June 16, 2023, in the 2200 block of East 12th Street. The victim is listed in stable condition. A second victim was listed in stable condition after being shot just after 3:00 a.m. on June 19, 2023, in the 800 block of 70th Avenue. Later that same day, just before 4:00 p.m., officers responded to the 8900 block of MacArthur Boulevard to investigate an incident in which three victims were shot. All three victims are listed in stable condition. Officers are looking for the person(s) responsible for all the shootings.
