Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao announced today that the City of Oakland will launch its first ever “One Oakland Spring Clean” the week of April 17. The event will highlight services for residents that improve our communities, address safety concerns and reduce blight.
The week will culminate on Saturday in citywide activities with more than 50 locations and hundreds of volunteers joining together to celebrate Earth Day.
“Spring is finally here and our City employees are hard at work, making Oakland cleaner and safer. Our Spring Clean will showcase a few of the many services the city offers that directly improve our communities while bringing together our workers, employers, residents and community organizations,” said Mayor Thao. “I’m excited to kick off this event and put a spotlight on the work we do every day to make Oakland a great place to live, work and play.”
Over the course of the week, the City and Mayor Thao will host a series of media and community events focused on making Oakland cleaner and safer:
Monday, April 17 - Pothole Blitz Update
Mayor Thao and Councilmembers Treva Reid, Kevin Jenkins and Janani Ramachandran will join Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) workers to provide a progress update on the Blitz and repair streets badly damaged by severe storms and a wet winter.

Tuesday, April 18 - Abandoned Auto Abatement
Mayor Thao and Councilmember Treva Reid will meet with Deputy City Administrator Joe DeVries and OakDOT workers as they clear abandoned autos. OakDOT recently launched its new abandoned auto unit as part of the City’s Reimagining Public Safety Initiative, bringing the responsibility for abatement under the umbrella of OakDOT.

Wednesday, April 19 - Community Clean-Up
City workers will join community partners to clean up City parks in advance of Earth Day. They will be at seven locations throughout the city. Mayor Thao will join the action at Carter Gilmore Park with Councilmember Kevin Jenkins.

Thursday, April 20 - Statewide Conference on Illegal Dumping
Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley has organized the 3rd Annual Statewide Conference on Illegal Dumping, focused on elevating and disseminating best practices for addressing illegal dumping. The theme of this year’s conference is “Partnerships” and seeks to promote cross-sector collaboration centered around the Three E’s Strategy (Education, Eradication, and Enforcement).

Friday, April 21 - Bulky Waste Services
Councilmember Carroll Fife will join City workers to highlight several services designed to help residents safely dispose of bulky items and keep our communities clean. These services are free and available to all residents, including renters. Details to be announced next week.
Saturday, April 22 - Earth Day
Hundreds of Oaklanders will come together to celebrate the 29th Earth Day with volunteer activities throughout the city, hosted by the City of Oakland.
Volunteers will participate in neighborhood clean-ups of streets, sidewalks, schools, parks and along creeks and other waterways. Volunteers will pick up litter, remove graffiti, weed and plant, restore native habitats and participate in other service events.
