OPD Makes Arrest in the Homicide of Lili Xu
At a news conference this afternoon, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong announced the arrests of 73-year-old Nelson Chia of Oakland and 33-year-old Hasheem Bason of Stockton for the fatal shooting of 60-year-old Lili XU of Oakland.
“This case was not about race! This case was about greed,” said Oakland Police Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong. “Some tried to use this case as a way of dividing our community. My hope is we can come together and support Xu’s family and our community, who have all experienced this tragedy.”
The homicide occurred on August 21, 2022, just after 2:00 PM in the 1000 block of 5th Avenue, an area some call Little Saigon.
Chief Armstrong said while Xu was exiting her parked vehicle, an older white, four-door Lexus pulled up, and an unknown individual exited the vehicle. The man fired multiple rounds, fatally striking Xu. Unfortunately, she died at a local hospital, where she died.
Over the last two months, OPD’s Homicide investigators worked tirelessly and diligently on the case, following up on tips from the community and exploring all investigative leads.
During the investigation, OPD uncovered evidence supporting the arrest of Chia, in what appears to be murder for hire, and Bason for his involvement in this heinous crime.
Chief Armstrong thanked all the dedicated women and men in OPD who worked on the investigation. The Chief also acknowledged the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Department of Justice (DOJ), Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
The case is now in the hands of the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
