Read Mayor Schaaf's Letter to Gov. Newsom
Today, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf wrote a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom asking for state assistance in combating dangerous violent crime, especially acts that involve the use of a motor vehicle on state highways. The Mayor asked the Gov. to consider:
- Vehicle license plate readers deployed on state highways at on- and off-ramp to improve real-time information gathering and coordination by regional law enforcement agencies
- CHP presence and traffic enforcement as much as possible on Oakland’s state highways, which include arterial streets such as San Pablo Ave. and International Blvd
- Leveraging Oakland’s participation in CHP’s Retail Theft Task Force to gather intelligence and combat caravan robberies of pharmacies, stores, and cannabis businesses
The request to Governor Newsom follows the Oakland City Council adopting Mayor Schaaf’s plan to unfreeze police positions and hire up to 60 additional officers, while maintaining historic levels of investment in crime prevention and intervention strategies. A copy of the letter is attached.
