OAKLAND, CA – On Friday, Mayor Libby Schaaf and Police Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong announced a new collaboration agreement with the California Highway Patrol to enhance traffic safety for all residents in Oakland.
In August, Oakland community members called on California state officials to provide more public safety resources into the City of Oakland. Mayor Schaaf personally discussed the request with Gov. Newsom, who agreed to support collaborative efforts between OPD and CHP.
“All of our residents deserve safer streets in their neighborhoods,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said. “I’m thankful for Governor Newsom and Commissioner Ray’s partnership with Oakland, as all of us are committed to reduce the harm, violence, and trauma caused by dangerous traffic activity on our streets.”
The new collaboration will begin this weekend. OPD will conduct focused and coordinated operations with CHP to reduce dangerous driving along Oakland’s high-injury corridors.
Additionally, based on the increase in sideshow activity, the CHP will assist the Oakland Police Department (OPD) sideshow enforcement teams.
The additional officers provided by CHP will support OPD’s efforts for sideshow enforcement every weekend through the end of September.
“OPD truly appreciates the assistance of CHP,” said Chief Armstrong. “CHP’s presence will provide much-needed assistance with the illegal sideshow activity that has plagued communities across our city. With their partnership, we seek to eradicate this illegal sideshow epidemic that has caused so many sleepless nights for our residents here in Oakland.”
CHP and OPD will work jointly to reduce injury and fatal crashes in the High Injury Network (HIN).
