Dear Oakland Community,
Over the last several days, our town has seen numerous planned and spontaneous demonstrations in response to the officer-involved killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. We are aware of a planned mobile protest at 5:00 tonight in the Fruitvale District.
We are providing this update in our effort to keep you informed. Please share this information with your employees, neighbors and tenants.
Yesterday the Director of Alameda County Office of Emergency Services issued a county-wide state of emergency and imposed a curfew from 8:00PM to 5:00 AM which went into effect June 1, 2020. The Order can be located at acgov.org. The City of Oakland also issued a curfew order yesterday.
Oakland has a proud tradition of peaceful protest, and we work hard to prioritize that right and to ensure safe spaces for peaceful demonstrations. The great majority of individuals that have been participating in these First Amendment activities have been doing so responsibly and peacefully, even as they express their disappointment and anger. However, separate groups have used this moment of community pain, outrage and grief to engage in violent, destructive criminal activity. The curfew is a tool to conserve resources to address the criminal behavior we see under the cover of night. Help us by staying home when the curfew begins at 8:00 PM.
OPD uses a free, web-based application called NIXLE to provide timely updates to our community about traffic disruptions or suggested alternate transportation routes. If you have not yet signed up for NIXLE, we encourage you to do so. Text your zip code to 888777 to opt-in, or visit www.nixle.com.
Sincerely,
Ed Reiskin
City Administrator
