Oakland, CA – On November 3, at 10:15 P.M, Oakland Police officers interrupted the attempted burglary/robbery of a cannabis grow inside a commercial building in the 1400 block of 92nd Avenue. Officers dressed in uniform attempted to detain those involved. Some of the occupants fled the area on foot and in vehicles. During the incident, three OPD officers were struck and injured by involved vehicles. An OPD officer discharged their firearm fatally striking a subject involved in the incident. Emergency medical aid was provided; however, the male adult succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. OPD’s investigation identified the male as a twenty-year-old Oakland resident and his identity is being withheld pending notification to next-of-kin. The injured officers were treated at a local hospital and have since been released. Oakland Police officers arrested over a dozen individuals and recovered nine firearms during this incident.
This critical incident also initiated a call for mutual aid. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team responded to the scene to assist.
It is important for us to recognize and remember any time there is an officer-involved shooting (OIS) in our community, it impacts the families, officers, and members of our community.
Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Division. Independent and concurrent investigations are also being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA). The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency. However, a complete investigative process requires information to be limited to maintain the integrity of the investigation. For this reason, only those preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation may be released at this time. Additional information will be released as soon as the investigation permits.
Last night’s criminal activity of caravans of armed robbers targeting our City, is similar to events that happened back in May and June of this year and has been occurring in other cities across the region. OPD is working with our law enforcement partners to form a regional response to these violent caravans that target commercial businesses.
During the events spanning last night, the Oakland Police Department responded to multiple incidents where roving teams of armed robbers caravanned across the city and the region targeting businesses with high-value consumer goods, including cannabis businesses, pharmacies, electronics stores, and other retail merchants. These opportunistic groups are coordinated, armed and dangerous, and highly mobile, hitting cities across the region and throughout the county, creating a dynamic and rapidly changing situation for law enforcement to address.
We wanted to assure our community and our merchants that we are mobilized to address these situations, in partnership with law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area as well as the California Highway Patrol, and our regional resources.
These are some of the calls for service that highlight the incidents that occurred last night in the City of Oakland:
•At 9:15 P.M., the Communications Division received reports from a caller regarding a burglary in the 9900 block of Pippin Street. Several vehicles observed and suspects were reported trying to break into the auto body shop.
•At 9:28 P.M., the Communications Division received a phone call from a business in the 8400 block of Amelia Street advising that 9 to 10 individuals were attempting to break into the business at this location.
•At 9:33 P.M., the Communications Division received a phone call from a caller advising of a possible burglary in progress at a cannabis cultivation business in the 200 block of Hegenberger Road. The reporting citizen advised over 100 people and approximately ten cars at this location.
•At 11:11 P.M., the Communications Division received reports from a caller regarding more than 20 gunshots heard in the 8400 block of Baldwin Street. The caller advised that 50 vehicles were involved, and said suspects were trying to break into the cannabis manufacturing business. The security guard was on scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspects. The security guard was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
•At 11:41 P.M., officers responded to the 3700 block of Mandela Parkway regarding reports of a caravan of 10-12 cars trying to break into Best Buy.
•At 12:13 A.M., officers responded to the 3000 block of East 9th Street on reports of 10 vehicles and 30-40 suspects breaking into the Starbucks store.
•At 12:23 A.M., officers responded to the 8100 block MacArthur Boulevard on the report of two suspects breaking into a cannabis grow.
•At 1:04 A.M., the Communications Division received a call from a caller in the area of High Street and Lyon Street when they observed a vehicle with 10 suspects trying to break into a cannabis dispensary using their vehicle to make entry.
•At 1:23 A.M., officers responded to the 10700 block of MacArthur Boulevard on the report of over 50 people breaking into the Shoe Palace.
•At 1:30 A.M., the Communications Division received reports of a shooting involving five suspects in the 4200 block of MacArthur
