Media Advisory: Oakland Department of Transportation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 8, 2019 Oakland Celebrates Bike to Work Day
Oakland, CA – On Thursday May 9, 2019, from 7am to 9:30am, Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) produces the largest Bike To Work Day celebration of the No Pollute Commute at Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of Oakland City Hall. Councilmember Dan Kalb will present a resolution celebrating the City of Oakland’s Gold Level Bicycle-Friendly Community designation and Bike To Work Day. Thursday marks the City of Oakland’s 26th celebration of Bike To Work Day, held on the 2nd Thursday of May each year. Bicycle commuters can enjoy a free pancake breakfast and browse information from a myriad of bicycle-friendly organizations. The Plaza activities include the very first public preview of adaptive bike share, a collaboration between the City’s Mobility team and ADA Programs, BORP and Lyft. Approximately 1,000 participants will enjoy pancakes catered by Blackberry Soul Café, returning for its third year; DJ Lumba Jack spinning classic tunes on the turntable; a complimentary bike valet service until 11am by Bike East Bay; and free on-the-spot bike fixing and diagnostics by LuckyDuck Bicycle Café. Oakland A’s are participating this year by hosting the Green Machine game and giveaways at the plaza, while the team mascot, Stomper, dons bike shoes to ride in with the Fruitvale BART pedal pool. Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) will also demo adaptive bikes on the pedal pool from the California Hotel. At 8:30, WOBO delivers a short program with Oakland Department of Transportation Director, Ryan Russo, elected officials and Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Commission representatives, with Councilmember Dan Kalb highlighting the impressive accomplishments by city staff and community groups in making Oakland a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community, a designation by the League of American Bicyclists and recognition awarded to only 34 communities across the country. Oakland’s Bike To Work Day 2019 festivities are sponsored by the City of Oakland, and local and regional sponsors in the Bay Area.
