Oakland, CA — On Saturday, October 19, The Oakland Fire Department will host a remembrance ceremony to reflect on the diverse experiences from the 1991 firestorm and highlight how various communities are working collaboratively to keep Oakland safe.
The Oakland hills firestorm started on October 19, 1991 and the fire lasted for three days. The firestorm resulted in 25 fatalities, and 150 others experienced injuries. The fire consumed 1,520 acres and the destructions included 2,843 single-family dwellings and 437 apartment and condominium units.
