Why a New Department of Transportation?

Oakland's New Department of Transportation.

Welcome to the Oakland Department of Transportation! This new department is dedicated to managing and improving how people get around on Oakland's city streets, sidewalks, highways and bridges. We are here to serve everyone moving from one place to another in Oakland, whether you're a pedestrian, a cyclist, a motorist or a transit rider.

The department was founded in June 2016 when the City Council approved a proposal lead by Mayor Libby Schaaf and City Administrator Sabrina Landreth. We work closely with other city departments, our local transit partners, and stakeholders at the local, regional, state and federal levels. Together we will reimagine how city streets are used, with a focus on serving people, rather than simply the movement of vehicles.

This is a new way of thinking about the scope of transportation. That's why the Oakland Department of Transportation will have a new organizational structure, new funding systems and a new strategic plan. The strategic plan outlines how this department will create new programs and policies to support safe, sustainable and affordable transportation for everyone who lives, works or visits in the City of Oakland.
