Maxwell Park Online Community Meeting

Greetings Maxwell Park Neighbors,

It has come to my attention that there has been a rash of vehicle break-ins and property crime in the Maxwell Park neighborhood this week. Some neighbors shared that they noticed a spike in auto thefts and break-ins. They are also troubled with a lack of response from 911 dispatch.

Let me state that I understand your anger and I am angry right along with you. This lawlessness deserves a swift and prompt response.

I have reached out to Oakland Police Assistant Chief Darren Allison and Oakland Police Area Captain Anthony Tedesco to inquire about more patrolling, burglary suppression techniques and other proactive strategies to address the crime. Additionally, I’ve asked Captain Tedesco to make the responsible community resource officers available for a community gathering tonight.

The purpose is to engage the community and restore a sense of safety and neighborhood well-being. Oakland Police Department (OPD) will be in attendance to both hear from you as well as share strategies to curtail the break-ins and provide other department updates.

If you have Ring doorbell footage of any break-ins please direct them to OPD. You can also register your security cameras with OPD to help solve crimes. I have also contacted our District Attorney's Office to speak about criminal prosecution for those that are engaging in these crimes.

The online community gathering will be held tonight Friday, February 2nd from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in collaboration with my office, the Maxwell Park Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and the Oakland Police Department.

If you are unable to make it to this meeting, I will also hold time at next week's February 8th Maxwell Park NCPC to address these break-ins.

Once again, I am upset and frustrated by the sheer brazenness of these crimes. Together, I know we can meet this moment and work to keep our neighborhood safer.
