The Oakland Police Department (OPD) made an arrest for the fatal hit-and-run of Santu Maya, which occurred on June 16, 2023, in the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue.
Due to the relentless and collaborative efforts of OPD Patrol Officers and the US Marshals, an individual has been safely taken into custody.
Background:
On June 16, 2023, just after 7:00 PM, OPD officers were dispatched to an injury collision involving a vehicle that struck a pedestrian at Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 58-year-old Santu Maya, of Oakland, suffering from a severe head injury related to the collision.
The Oakland Fire Department (OFD) and Falck Ambulance arrived at the scene and rendered emergency aid. Maya was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries, but shortly after the collision, she was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation indicates Maya was crossing the street within a marked crosswalk, when struck by a vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene without providing required information when a collision occurs. The suspect vehicle is a newer Mercedes Benz, possibly 2010 - 2013 E-350, black in color with tinted windows and stock rims. The rear license plate, CA 5AUT731, may have been removed.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this collision, however, speed and street racing appear to be contributing factors.
The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.
