On March 20, 2021, at approximately 1052 AM, Oakland Police Officers conducted surveillance on an individual in an occupied vehicle believed to be involved in a shooting of an unoccupied vehicle on March 19, 2021. The suspect fled the area on foot entering an unsheltered encampment and barricaded himself in the area of E. 12th Street and 17th Avenue. Officers established a perimeter around the encampment to contain the suspect
For the safety of the residents and visitors of Oakland and the potential level of violence, OPD approved the use of the Emergency Rescue Vehicle and SUV. This deployment was necessary because a firearm was used during the shooting of the unoccupied vehicle the prior day.
Officers utilized numerous resources to allow the safe surrender of the suspect. After several hours a Tactical Operations Team was initiated. After further consideration and mitigating circumstances, OPD decided to disengage. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information should contact the Oakland Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit at (510) 238-3728.
