On January 25th, 2021, at approximately 11:08 PM, Oakland Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 55th Street and Martin Luther King Junior Way to investigate a report of a collision involving two vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 2012 Jeep Liberty was traveling north on MLK Jr Way when it made a left westbound turn onto 55th Street. A 2001 Toyota Camry traveled MLK Jr Way at a high rate of speed and collided with the Jeep. After the collision, the Toyota lost control, continued southbound MLK Jr Way, and then collided with a pillar in the 5400 block of MLK Jr Way.
Oakland Fire Department and FALCK ambulance service arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver of the Toyota deceased.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as a 40-year-old male non-Oakland resident. The driver of the Jeep was identified as a 54-year-old female Oakland resident, who stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this collision. The identity of the motorist is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
